Golden Circle Itinerary: Plan Your Perfect Day

By Golden Circle Day ToursApril 5, 2025Travel Guide

Planning Your Golden Circle Day

The Golden Circle is Iceland's most popular day trip, and with good reason. This roughly 300-kilometre loop from Reykjavik takes in three of the country's most spectacular natural attractions, and it can be comfortably completed in a single day. But a great Golden Circle experience requires good planning. This guide provides detailed itineraries for every type of traveller, from the time-pressed to the leisurely explorer.

The Classic Itinerary (6-7 Hours)

This is the most popular route, covering the three main stops with enough time to appreciate each one without feeling rushed.

08:30 - Depart Reykjavik. Head east on Route 1, then turn onto Route 36 towards Þingvellir. The drive takes approximately 45 minutes through increasingly dramatic scenery as you leave the city behind.

09:15-10:15 - Þingvellir National Park. Park at the main car park (P1, 750 ISK). Walk through the Almannagjá canyon, stopping at the viewpoints overlooking the rift valley and lake. Continue to the Öxarárfoss waterfall if time permits. Allow 60 minutes.

10:15-11:05 - Drive to Geysir. Take Route 36 south, then Route 365 and Route 37 east. The drive takes approximately 50 minutes through rolling farmland and past small villages.

11:05-11:50 - Geysir Geothermal Area. Watch 2-3 Strokkur eruptions (every 5-10 minutes), explore the wider geothermal field, and visit the gift shop. Allow 45 minutes.

11:50-12:00 - Drive to Gullfoss. Just 10 minutes up Route 35.

12:00-12:45 - Gullfoss Waterfall. Walk to both the upper and lower viewing platforms. The cafe here is a good lunch option. Allow 45 minutes.

12:45-14:15 - Return to Reykjavik. Drive south on Route 35, then west on Route 1. The return journey takes approximately 90 minutes.

The Extended Itinerary (9-10 Hours)

Add two or three extra stops for a more comprehensive experience.

08:00 - Depart Reykjavik. Earlier start to accommodate extra stops.

08:45-10:00 - Þingvellir National Park. Extended visit with time for the longer walking trails.

10:45-11:45 - Laugarvatn Fontana or Friðheimar. Stop for a geothermal bread tasting at Fontana or the famous tomato soup at Friðheimar greenhouse. Book Friðheimar in advance as it fills up quickly.

12:00-12:45 - Geysir Geothermal Area.

13:00-13:45 - Gullfoss Waterfall.

14:15-14:45 - Kerið Volcanic Crater. A quick but rewarding stop. Walk around the rim and down to the lake. Entry 400 ISK.

15:00-16:00 - Secret Lagoon. Optional hot spring soak in Flúðir. Bring a swimsuit. Entry approximately 3,000 ISK.

16:00-17:30 - Return to Reykjavik.

The Photography Itinerary (10-12 Hours)

Designed for photographers who want the best light and compositions.

Early morning or late afternoon departure to catch golden hour at the first stop. In summer, this means departing very early (05:00) or late (16:00). In winter, the entire day is essentially golden hour.

Þingvellir: 90 minutes minimum. Explore the lesser-known viewpoints along the eastern rim of Almannagjá. The reflection of the canyon walls in Silfra's clear water is best in calm conditions.

Geysir: 60 minutes. Position yourself upwind of Strokkur for spray-free shots. A low angle with the sky as background produces the most dramatic eruption photos. Use burst mode to capture the peak moment.

Gullfoss: 90 minutes. The lower platform provides the most dramatic perspective. In sunny conditions, position yourself for rainbow shots in the spray. A polarising filter cuts through the mist. The canyon downstream offers less-photographed but equally stunning compositions.

Driving Tips

The Golden Circle follows well-maintained paved roads throughout. Speed limits are 90 km/h on rural roads and 50 km/h in towns. Fuel stations are available in Selfoss, Laugarvatn, and near Geysir. All major attractions have free parking except Þingvellir (750 ISK). In winter, check road conditions at road.is before departing and carry a fully charged phone.

Where to Eat

Friðheimar: The famous tomato greenhouse restaurant. Unlimited tomato soup, fresh bread, and desserts. Reservations essential.

Geysir Bistro: Adjacent to the geothermal area. Lamb soup, sandwiches, and Icelandic pastries.

Gullfoss Cafe: At the waterfall car park. Traditional lamb soup and coffee with a view.

Efstidalur II: A working dairy farm between Þingvellir and Geysir. Fresh ice cream and burgers while watching the cows being milked.

Tips for the Best Experience

  • Drive the route counter-clockwise (Þingvellir first) to stay ahead of the tour bus crowds
  • Pack lunch to save time and money, or book Friðheimar well in advance
  • Bring layers and waterproof clothing regardless of the forecast
  • Fill your water bottle from any tap - Iceland's water is among the purest in the world
  • Download offline maps in case of poor mobile signal in rural areas
  • Allow buffer time for unexpected stops - Iceland has a way of surprising you with beauty around every corner
