Despite the harshness of Icelandic winters, Friðheimar manages to harvest an incredible 370 tons of greenhouse tomatoes each year and even yields more than a ton every single day. A staggering 18 percent of Iceland's tomatoes are sourced from Friðheimar.
There is also a restaurant and a horse farm along with the greenhouse experience. That makes it a perfect spot for a mini-day tour.
How Did Friðheimar Greenhouse Start?
Couple Knútur and Helena, experienced in both horticulture and horse-rearing, had their sights set on Friðheimar when they purchased the property back in 1995. This location had already been utilizing natural hot springs to cultivate plants since 1946!
From 1995-2001, the farm team achieved a milestone by constructing an expansive 1,174 m² greenhouse. Years later from 2002-2006, they continued to progress even further and made it possible for tomato plants to grow with newly installed lighting as well as yet another new addition of a 1,000 m² greenhouse!
Between 2007 and 2013, the team constructed an equestrian center complete with tourist services including a stable for 20 horses and an outdoor arena that could seat 120 spectators. To attract more visitors to the facility, they launched an Icelandic horse show as well as greenhouse tours.
Since 2011, tourism has been a primary area of focus. Ever since that, they have opened a restaurant and a gift shop as well.
Now, the couple runs the restaurant with their five kids and a dedicated team all year round.
Where Is It Located?
