7 Golden Circle Mistakes to Avoid
After guiding thousands of visitors around the Golden Circle, we have seen the same mistakes repeated over and over. Here are the seven most common ones and how to avoid them.
1. Starting Too Late
The Golden Circle is best experienced with an early start (8-9 AM departure). Starting after 10 AM means you will hit every stop at peak crowd times and may run out of daylight in winter.
2. Skipping Thingvellir
Some visitors rush through Thingvellir to get to the more photogenic Geysir and Gullfoss. This is a mistake — Thingvellir is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with incredible geological and historical significance. Give it at least 45 minutes.
3. Wrong Footwear
Paths at Golden Circle stops can be wet, icy (in winter), or uneven. Sturdy, waterproof hiking shoes or boots are essential. Sneakers and sandals are not appropriate.
4. Not Dressing in Layers
Iceland weather changes rapidly. Even in summer, you can experience sun, rain, and wind in a single hour. Dress in layers with a waterproof outer shell.
5. Only Visiting the Three Main Stops
The Golden Circle has many hidden gems beyond the big three: Kerid Crater, Faxi Waterfall, Fridheimar Tomato Farm, and the Secret Lagoon are all on or near the route.
6. Not Booking in Advance
Popular tours, especially small group and private options, sell out days or weeks in advance during peak season (June-August). Book early to secure your preferred date and tour type.
7. Driving the Route Counterclockwise
If self-driving, go clockwise (Thingvellir first). This puts you ahead of the tour buses and means less crowded stops throughout the day.
