Langjökull — the name means "long glacier" — is one of Iceland's largest ice caps, covering roughly 900 square kilometres of the western highlands and rising to about 1,450 metres above sea level. It sits directly north of the Golden Circle route, which is why a glacier leg and a Golden Circle leg fit into the same day of driving. The two landscapes are connected by more than proximity: meltwater leaves the ice cap's southern margin through the lake Hvítárvatn and becomes the Hvítá river, the same glacial river that later drops through a narrow canyon to form Gullfoss. Travelling from the ice cap down to the waterfall follows that watercourse from source to gorge. Conditions on the ice change through the year — snow cover, crevassing, and highland road access all shift with the season and the weather — so the surface you ride in March is not the surface you ride in August.
