South Coast Tours from Reykjavik

Iceland's South Coast is a dramatic landscape of thundering waterfalls, black sand beaches, and glacier tongues reaching toward the sea. Our South Coast tours take you to Seljalandsfoss (the waterfall you can walk behind), Skógafoss (a 60-meter curtain of water), and Reynisfjara black sand beach with its iconic basalt columns. For longer tours, continue to Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon where icebergs float in a crystal-clear lake. The South Coast is the perfect complement to the Golden Circle, offering a completely different side of Iceland's natural beauty. The route follows Route 1 — the Ring Road — southeast out of Reykjavík, crossing the Hellisheiði plateau before descending into the farmland of the southern lowlands. The sights then line up along the road in sequence. Seljalandsfoss, about 125 kilometres from the capital, falls roughly 60 metres over what was once a sea cliff, and a footpath loops through the hollow behind the curtain of water. Skógafoss, some 30 kilometres further east, drops about 60 metres over a ledge around 25 metres wide, fed by the Skógá river descending from the highlands between two glaciers. Between the two waterfalls, a side road leads toward Sólheimajökull, an outlet glacier flowing down from the Mýrdalsjökull ice cap. Reynisfjara, near the village of Vík í Mýrdal about 180 kilometres from Reykjavík, is a black-sand beach framed by the basalt columns of Hálsanefshellir cave and facing the Reynisdrangar sea stacks offshore; the beach is also known for sudden, powerful sneaker waves, and the on-site warning signs deserve attention. Day itineraries typically turn around at Vík, while extended ones continue roughly 190 kilometres further east to Jökulsárlón, where icebergs calve from an outlet of the Vatnajökull ice cap into a tidal lagoon before drifting out to sea past the adjacent black beach. The coastline changes character with the season — green and busy with birdlife in summer, often snow-covered with partly frozen falls in winter.
