Kerid Crater

Kerid Crater, located in Iceland’s scenic Golden Circle, is a stunning volcanic crater lake that captivates visitors with its vibrant colors and geological significance. Formed approximately 3,000 years ago, this remarkable site is a testament to Iceland’s dynamic volcanic activity and offers a unique and picturesque landscape.

The crater itself is about 55 meters deep, 170 meters wide, and 270 meters in circumference. Its steep walls are composed of striking red volcanic rock, contrasting beautifully with the deep blue waters of the lake at its base. During summer, the surrounding vegetation adds lush green hues, while winter blankets the crater in snow, creating a breathtaking natural palette year-round.

What makes Kerid particularly fascinating is its origin as a caldera. Unlike typical volcanic craters formed by explosive eruptions, Kerid was created when a cone volcano erupted and then collapsed into its own emptied magma chamber. This unique formation process contributes to the crater’s distinctive shape and vibrant colors.

Visitors can easily walk around the rim of the crater, providing panoramic views and excellent photo opportunities. A path also leads down to the edge of the lake, allowing for an up-close encounter with this natural wonder.

Kerid Crater is not just a visual spectacle but also a geological marvel, offering a glimpse into the powerful forces that shape our planet. Whether you’re a nature enthusiast or a casual traveler, a visit to Kerid Crater promises an unforgettable experience in the heart of Iceland’s volcanic landscape.

We went with Arctic Adventures. Our guide was Andre and he made our trip fantastic. Mini bus was great, places great. Secret lagoon was very hot, careful if kids are getting in. All the other stops were fun and a hood 8 hours spent.

Brilliant tour. Tour guide was very informative and funny. Told you plenty of things about each site you visited. Definitely recommend
