Silfra fissure in Þingvellir National Park is one of the world's top snorkeling and diving sites. Here, glacial water filtered through lava rock for decades emerges with astonishing clarity — visibility exceeds 100 meters. You will float between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates, surrounded by vivid blues and greens unlike anything you have seen before. Our snorkeling tours combine this extraordinary underwater experience with visits to all three Golden Circle highlights. All equipment (drysuit, hood, gloves) is provided, and no prior experience is needed. The fissure exists because Þingvellir sits directly on the boundary between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates, which pull apart by about two centimetres a year; Silfra is one of the cracks that opened in the lava as the ground stretched, and it reaches deep enough to intersect the groundwater. That water begins as meltwater on the Langjökull ice cap and travels underground through porous basalt for decades before welling up in the fissure, arriving filtered to drinking-water clarity and holding a steady 2–4°C in every season — which is why the site is swum year-round and why the visibility barely changes between January and July. Snorkelers drift through named sections of the fissure — the narrow Big Crack, the wide Silfra Hall, the deep-blue Cathedral, and the shallow, sandy Lagoon — carried gently along by the slow flow of water moving toward Þingvallavatn, the lake the fissure feeds. Þingvellir National Park itself has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2004, and the snorkeling site lies only a few minutes from the historic assembly plains and the Almannagjá gorge, where the same plate boundary can be walked on dry land. That geography is what makes the pairing natural: the rift you float through at Silfra is the rift you stand in at Þingvellir, and Geysir and Gullfoss lie further along the same loop.
