Iceland sits on one of the most geothermally active regions on Earth, and bathing in natural hot springs is a cherished Icelandic tradition. Our geothermal tours take you beyond the tourist spots to experience authentic hot spring culture. Visit the Secret Lagoon in Flúðir (Iceland's oldest pool), discover Laugarvatn Fontana's lakeside geothermal baths, or soak in hidden hot pots known only to locals. Combined with Golden Circle sightseeing, these tours offer the perfect blend of adventure and relaxation. All geothermal entry fees are included. The heat itself is a product of Iceland's position astride the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, where the crust is thin and groundwater meets hot rock before returning to the surface as springs and steam. The farmland the Golden Circle crosses is dotted with these springs, and communities grew up around them. The Secret Lagoon — Gamla Laugin, 'the old pool' — in the village of Flúðir dates from 1891 and is commonly described as Iceland's oldest swimming pool; it is still ringed by steaming vents, and a small geyser spouts beside the water every few minutes. At Laugarvatn, geothermal springs emerge on the lake shore itself: locals have taken steam baths above the natural vents there since 1929, and bathers can move between warm pools and the cool lake a few steps away. Bathing water at these pools generally sits around 38–42°C — hot-bath warm rather than scalding — and the bathing tradition runs deep in everyday Icelandic life: most towns keep a geothermally heated pool and hot pots, and the same underground heat warms roughly nine in ten Icelandic homes. The geothermal stops also sit naturally on the sightseeing route — Flúðir and Laugarvatn both lie within a short drive of Geysir and Gullfoss, so a soak fits into the loop without a long detour. Which pool a given itinerary visits, and how bathing time fits around the sightseeing stops, is listed on each product page.
