The Small Group tour with Kerið Crater and Friðheimar caps the group at 19 passengers. You also get two extra stops — the colourful volcanic crater lake at Kerið and the famous Friðheimar tomato greenhouse where you can try tomato soup and locally made ice cream. The cheapest guided option we offer is the Golden Circle Classic Tour at 13,350 ISK per person. It runs 7–8 hours, covers all three landmarks (Þingvellir National Park, the Geysir geothermal area, and Gullfoss waterfall) and includes hotel pickup in Reykjavik and an English-speaking guide. No other tour we run sees the full route for less.

The only realistic alternative is self-driving. As of 2026, once you add up the rental car, fuel for the roughly 300 km loop, and insurance supplements, a compact car typically comes to roughly 15,000–25,000 ISK per day all-in, and more in peak summer. How that compares depends on your group:

• Solo traveller: the Classic Tour at 13,350 ISK is clearly cheaper than 15,000–25,000 ISK for a car you fill alone.
• Couple: roughly break-even. Self-driving works out to about 7,500–12,500 ISK each versus 13,350 ISK each on the tour, except the tour adds a guide, hotel pickup, and zero driving.
• Group of four or more: self-drive wins on price at about 4,000–6,000 ISK per person, if you are comfortable driving in Iceland.

In winter the comparison tilts further towards the guided tour. Standard rental insurance often excludes gravel, ash, and wind damage, December daylight lasts only 4–5 hours, and road conditions change quickly. On a tour, all of that becomes someone else's job: a driver-guide who runs the route daily and monitors conditions for you.

A simple way to compare tours is the price per hour of sightseeing. Using the prices above:

• Golden Circle Classic Tour: 13,350 ISK over 7–8 hours works out to around 1,500 ISK per hour, the lowest rate of any tour we run.
• Golden Circle Classic and Northern Lights Mystery: 20,299 ISK over 14–16 hours is about 1,350 ISK per hour. The premium buys an evening aurora hunt on top of the full daytime loop, with lunch included (winter season only).
• Small Group with Kerið & Friðheimar: 19,925 ISK over 8.5 hours is about 2,350 ISK per hour, the premium buying you two extra stops (Kerið crater and the Friðheimar greenhouse) and a more personal minibus day.

One caveat: price per hour favours long days and undersells the combo tours, because their prices include admissions you would otherwise pay separately, such as Secret Lagoon entry on the Secret Lagoon combo and comfort admission on the Blue Lagoon combo. If pure cost efficiency is the goal, the Classic Tour wins. If you are visiting in winter and want the longest single day out, the Northern Lights Mystery combo packs the most hours of Iceland into one booking, even though its per-hour rate is higher.
