Snorkel Between Continents
Silfra fissure is one of the world's most extraordinary snorkeling sites. Located within Thingvellir National Park, this crack between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates is filled with glacial water so pure that visibility exceeds 100 metres. Floating through Silfra feels like flying through liquid crystal.
The Snorkeling Experience
After a thorough safety briefing and dry suit fitting, you enter the water at Silfra's Big Crack. The snorkel route takes you through Silfra Hall, a wide section with stunning blue hues, then into the narrow Silfra Cathedral where the fissure walls tower above you, and finally into the Silfra Lagoon where the vivid green and blue colours are at their most intense. The entire snorkel takes about 30-40 minutes.
The Golden Circle After Silfra
After warming up with hot chocolate, you continue the Golden Circle route. Since Silfra is inside Thingvellir National Park, you have already seen one of the Big Three. Your guide then takes you to Geysir to watch Strokkur erupt and Gullfoss to witness the thundering Golden Falls. It is an action-packed day that combines Iceland's best adventure activity with its most iconic sightseeing route.
Practical Information
The dry suit keeps your body dry and insulated, but your face and hands will be exposed to the 2-4 degree water. Most people describe the sensation as refreshing rather than painful. Wear warm base layers (wool or synthetic, never cotton) and bring a change of warm clothes. The tour departs at 08:00 to ensure the best conditions at Silfra.
